Conrad--Origin of phrase 'with heartiness and dispatch'

The Nature of a Crime was the last of the three collaborations between Joseph Conrad and Ford Madox Hueffer (later Ford) to be written and published. The senior editor of the edition, J. H. Stape, has succeeded in establishing that the phrase in Conrad's manuscript is actually 'heartiness and dispatch'. It is possible that Conrad decided to change 'heartiness' to 'neatness' while dictating, but it seems equally possible that Conrad misread his own writing while dictating, and, in correcting the typescript, passed over this change to his original formulation.
