Zusammenfassung:We developed a finite difference simulation for a charged microsphere trapped in a Paul trap at atmospheric pressure undergoing Brownian motion. We demonstrate a theory that shows the variance of the motion of the particle increases both for weak traps and as the trap approaches its instability points. Measurements of the variance for a micron-sized dust particle in an ion trap confirm an increase in the variance as the trap is weakened.
