Zusammenfassung: | Greek amphorae were stamped from the end of the 6th and the beginning of the 5th centuries BC onwards. This practice became important during the Hellenistic Period. Stamping amphorae continued until the middle of the 1st century BC among Greek settlements. During the 1st century BC stamping amphorae ceased in these areas for historical reasons. The main reason being that, with Roman rule, the period of producure city-states, that w ere common in the Hellenistic period, came to an end. From then, Rhodes, Knidos, Kos and Khios, started producing amphorae up to standards specified by Rome. The changes in traditional forms of the amphoras of Rhodes, Knidos and Kos, and the production of Rhodes and Kos type amphorae in places other than their homeland, are important pieces of evidence that demonstrate this situation. As a result, the stamping of amphorae in Greek settlements ended. |
