The contribution discusses the use of the term parallel text and the benefits of the use of parallel texts in translation and translation teaching. We will give a short overview of the history of the term in Translation Science and of the controversies regarding its relevance and limitations in translation class, classifying the most important approaches. Special attention is paid to the question of which texts are to be regarded as parallel texts and if translated texts should be automatically excluded. We conclude the article with proposals for parallel text comparison in translation didactics.
