Zusammenfassung:In this way, she promoted a progressive reform agenda that supported the emancipation of women and their right to work without openly contradicting the social and religious mores of her day or undermining the husband's authority at home. [...]Arenal advanced the women's movement, but was not a feminist in the modern sense. The following chapter deals with the works of Concepción Gimeno de Flaquer, which the author sees as an evolutionary step towards Hispanic Feminism, particularly the woman's position in the intellectual sphere. Examining debates relating women to agriculture and nature, the essayist connected women and their function in society to the Enlightenment ideals of reason, science, and civilization, supporting the right of women to be educated, and railing against the conservative dogma of the Catholic Church.
