Zusammenfassung:This article highlights that physicians for Social Responsibility is a national organization committed to public and professional education about the medical consequences of nuclear weapons and nuclear war. To this end, it has sponsored numerous symposia nationwide which have examined the medical and social realities of a nuclear war as it might occur by computer error, irrational act, escalating "limited" nuclear war, calculated design, or otherwise. At worst, due to incalculable effects on the ozone layer, due to reflecting dust in the atmosphere, due to epidemics while immunological defenses are compromised, and due to completely unpredictable mutations and unknown biological imbalances, a nuclear war might result in a global catastrophe leading to the extinction of our species and many others.
