Somatic and Meiotic Chromosomes in Guizotia abyssinica, Cass

Somatic and meiotic chromosomes in Guizotia abyssinica were examined. At metaphase in somatic division 30 chromosomes were observed in cells from three root tips. Nucleolar fragments were rarely seen. Seven plants were examined at various stages of meiotic process. At diakinesis fifteen bivalents and a nucleolus were observed. In some pollen mother cells trivalent and tetravalent were possibly formed. Secondary associations were seen at I metaphase and at the end of the second division. The segregation of chromosomes was regular. Pollen counts were made from 104 plants of which 29 showed pollen sterility between 1-21%.
