Photochemical and Redox Switching in a Ring-closed Isomer of Thioindigo-extended Quinone

A new dispiro π-system having a bis(2,6-di-tert-butylcyclohexadienone) unit was synthesized and characterized. Photoirradiation gave an ESR-active bis(phenoxy) radical and electrochemical reduction formed a bis(phenoxide) ion both by ring-opening.
