According to Spivak, 'One of the ways to get around the confines of one's "identity" as one produces expository prose is to work at someone else's title, as one works with a language that belongs to many others. According to the introduction, the life and poetry of He Shuangqing are recorded in a work called Xiqing sanji (Random Records From West-Green) by Shi Zhenlin (1693-1779), an otherwise little-known writer. According to Shi Zhenlin, Shuangqing (who appears in his work without a surname) was born into a family of lowly peasants.
