"Free and for the Listening": Discovering American Music with "Art of the States"

Brody highlights the hybrid enterprise "Art of the States," which offers a radio show and a web site. The brainchild of record and radio producer Joel Gordon, co-produced by Matthew Packwood, the program is in use by 75 major broadcasters in 50 countries. To date, 118 shows have been produced, distributing over 700 works by 300 American composers. In addition to showing how to make radio more democratic and personal, "Art of the States" may also demonstrate how the Internet might become a site for a new kind of musical community.
