Zusammenfassung:Advances in computer technology are allowing the development of software tools which can give more knowledgeable advice and support to students in managing their own learning. This approach is particularly important when attempting to improve problem solving skills. The paper comments on experience in developing and evaluating software support systems for students' learning to apply mathematical methods in the Biological Sciences. Included are the analysis of talk-aloud problem solving protocols and the implementation of a learner command vocabulary for the on-line investigation and solving of pre-stored problems. These techniques improved performances but were less successful in the transfer of skills. The conclusion provides the design of a knowledge based learning Advisor to overcome these defects.
