Zusammenfassung:	The hygienic status of feral (wild) venison has been surveyed in New Zealand game packing houses licensed for export. Total, coliform, Escherichia coli and staphylococcal counts, which ranged over 104‐108/g, 101‐106/g, 101‐106/g and 102‐108/g respectively, were higher than those normally associated with beef and sheep meats. Higher total counts were found on samples incubated at 25°C compared with 5°C, and on trimmed meat samples compared with primal cuts. Salmonellae were not detected in any of the 67 samples examined.
