Zusammenfassung:The Economist is a prominent weekly newspaper well known among students of economics and financial affairs. No less prominent is the tendency for the magazine to engage in wordplay of various forms in the headlines of articles. This study consists of an empirical analysis of the article headlines of four issues. Three types of 'foregrounding devices' are distinguished: puns, allusions and metaphors. In addition, the use of phonological devices such as alliteration and assonance in the headlines is highlighted.
