The Voice from the Prompt Box: Otto Luening Remembers James Joyce in Zurich

American composer Otto Luening knew James Joyce in Zurich, Switzerland, between 1918 and 1919 where Joyce managed the English Players of whom Luening became a part. Luening remembers Joyce's connection with music and finds it reflected in Joyce's literary works despite the lack of attention paid that element by literary scholars. Joyce had little musical ability with the exception of his singing which was very good. Luening participated in five plays and remembers best Joyce as the prompter for the English Players.
