Zusammenfassung:Hesitations have been found to relate to the amount of distraction and annoyance that is reported by listeners of nonnative English. Hesitations also correlate negatively with reported intelligibility. This study looked at quantitative data concerning hesitation phenomena in relation to the subjective perceptions of listeners of nonnative English. It was found that subjective judgements of the number of hesitations or pauses in nonnative speech are based not so much on speech rate or pause rate but on total pausing time, percentage of pause time, and particularly on the length of the longest pause in discourse.
