Zusammenfassung:The use of a winter or "hot house" by several historic tribes in the Southeast is well documented in the ethnohistoric literature. The recent discovery of dual summer and winter dwellings on Middle Woodland villages in the upper Duck Valley in Middle Tennessee dating between A.D. 200 and A.D. 500 indicates this seasonal house tradition developed early in the Southeast. The space-time distribution of this seasonal house, and a hypothesis about its origin and changing function through time are discussed.
