Zusammenfassung:It is commonly assumed that modernization generally brings an increase in sexual equality. This paper examines the alternative possibility, that modernization favors an inferior status for women. Focusing on economic variables as a basis for comparison, an examination of modern changes in various societies in which women's traditional position has been relatively strong indicates a deterioration in women's position relative to men.
