Summary This is intended to be a review of the recently published work on the pharmacological basis of tolerance. It has beta mode easier by the recent appearance of three relevant publications in this field. These are Adolescent Drug Dependence (1968) ed. C. W. M. Wilson, which is the product of a symposium sponsored by this society: The Scientfic Basis of Drug Dependence (1969) ed. H. Steinberg, which is the product of a symposium organised by the Biological Council: and Federation Proceedings (1970) 29, No. I, which contains a number of papers on the subject.
