Zusammenfassung: | Until demolition in the late 1950s, Sophiatown was a black freehold township that was a suburb of Johannesburg, South Africa. Overcrowding, squalor, poverty, violence, and rack-renting characterized Sophiatown as a slum. Balanced against these characteristics were the attributes of community, freedom, liveliness, and variety that gave the suburb a unique personality among black townships in the metropolitan area. South African literature in English preserves the enigma of Sophiatown, the spirit of a black urban slum. |
