Reversal learning of an avoidance response as a function of prior fear conditioning and fear extinction

Zusammenfassung:65 male albino rats were trained to avoid shock in a 1-way avoidance box by running from Side A into Side B within 5 sec. after a start gate was opened. After attaining a learning criterion, Ss were taught the "reversal avoidance" of running from Side B to Side A. However, just prior to the reversal training, the 65 Ss were divided into 5 equal groups for special, pre-reversal treatments. Group 1 was given reversal training immediately after reaching criterion on the initial avoidance. Group 2 received a 15-min fear-conditioning session (consisting of periodic experimenter-terminated shocks) while penned up in Side B. Group 3 received an identical fear-conditioning session while penned up in Side A. Group 4 received a 15-min shock-free session while penned up in Side B. Group 5 received a similar 15-min, shock-free, fear-extinction session while penned up in Side A. Groups 2 and 5 were significantly superior to the other 3 groups in learning the reversal avoidance. Group 3 was significantly inferior to all other groups. (French summary)
