Futebol, nacionalismo e "cultura physica" em Vitória (Brasil): a construção do estádio Governador Bley (1936)/Soccer, Nacionalism and "Cultura Physica" in Vitória (Brazil): the Building of Governador Bley Stadium (1936)

The aim of this research was to investigate some political, economical, geographical and cultural processes in consequence of the building of "Governador Bley" Stadium in Vitória, Brazil, whose inauguration was in 1936. It was considered in that time the third bigger stadium in the country. The main sources were the newspapers A Gazeta and Diário da Manhã, and the magazines Vida Capichaba and Chanaan. The results suggest: a) the power of sport practices in changing the urban scene of Vitória and its social dynamic; b) the (political) power of sport (and generally of physical exercises) toward a reinvention of national identity and its resulting "new" Man building (physically, morally and intellectually regenerated).
