Before Borjon: The French Court Musette to 1672

Using a description from 17th century French author and musician Pierre Borjon de Scellery as a starting point, the musette, a small bagpipe-like instrument, is explored. The earliest known references to the musette date to the thirteenth century, and it is believed that the instrument descended from similar Greek and Roman instruments. Notable French musette makers are included in the discussion.
