Zusammenfassung: | During most of this period he also taught New Testament Greek at the Theological College in Jakarta. [...]he had to immerse himself in the study of Hebrew in order to be up to his task of translating parts of the Old Testament. [...]the cooperation of local authorities left much to be desired because of lack of interest in the absence of financial incentives, suspicion against foreign researchers, who at that time were still an unknown phenomenon in Indonesia, or rivalry among various petty lords (military, civil, religious) each bent on asserting his authority over against his rivals. [...]his own Faculty proved unwilling to provide the finance to pay other institutions to do the work, so that Grijns was often saddled with the substantial financial burden of the project, which he was actually carrying out as part of his assignment as senior lecturer. [...]he was able to define the so-called common core of the various dialects (which is usually left out of consideration in dialect research as being 'uninteresting' or 'irrelevant') in an objective way, thereby making an interesting original contribution to the study of the relation between Jakarta Malay and Bahasa Indonesia. |
