Zusammenfassung: | Here, Halbert et al reply to Patrick J White and Rick L Warren's comment arguing the conclusions and suggestions made in their recent assessment of population structure among Yellowstone National Park (YNP) bison based on 46 autosomal microsatellite loci in 661 animals. They submit that a cautious approach be used for conservation of the YNP bison in light their evidence that significant genetic differences exist between subpopulations. To be clear, they say, they are not proposing that the management goals for YNP bison should include the preservation of the specific alleles reported by them. The appropriate use of the best-available scientific information is the best foundation for development of management policies moving forward for this irreplaceable natural resource. |
