Zusammenfassung: | States that one of the most significant turning points in Hungarian music occurred in the mid 1910s and is linked with the generation characterized by names such as Béla Bartók and Zoltán Kódaly. Informs, however, that the preceding generation thought that this change jeopardized the value of the past and viewed as its formal task the preservation of traditions. Indicates that the world-renowned violinist and teacher Jenö Hubay (1858-1937) belonged to this conservative generation. Presents an historical picture of the transformation of Hungarian music, based on the diary of Hubay, which he began in 1903. Asserts that the traditionalist Hubay was able to recognize the great talents of the new generation and tried to be as helpful to Bartók at the beginning of his career as he had been to Ernst von Dohnányi several years earlier. |
