P-273: Fluvastatine improves carotid-imt in hypertensive patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus treated with valsartan-hct

Carotid intima-media tickness (C-IMT) has recently generated considerable interest as markers of atherosclerosis and is considered a good predictor of peripheral vascular disease in hypertensive patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) and hypercolesterolemia.The objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of Valsartan-Hydrochlorothiazide (V-HCT) in combination with Fluvastatine (F) on C-IMT in hypertensive patients with type 2 DM and altered lipid profile; than we treated for 24 months 98 consecutive patients (40% females) with mild to moderate hypertension (JNC VI), never treated with antihypertensive medications, with type 2 DM and hypercholesterolemia; exclusion criteria was:1)Smokers; 2)Secondary hypertension; 3)Diabetic nephropaty; 4) Chronic renal failure; 5) Evidence of artery plaque; 6) Severe obesity; 7)Congestive heart failure (3°–4° NYHA class); 8)IMT less than 0,8 mm..we divided in two groups; 1° Group: n.50; age 64±9; IMT 1,174 mm.; LDL-chol 178±47 mg/dl; HDL-chol 43±12 mg/dl; HbA1c 7,8±2,6%; PAS 152; PAD 103, treated with with one oral daily dose of V (160 mg.) combined with HCT (12,5 mg.) and F ( 80 mg.); 2° Group: n. 48; age 65±9; IMT 1,136 mm.; LDL-chol 163±59 mg/dl; HDL-chol 37±10 mg/dl; HbA1c 8,1±3,4%; PAS 154; PAD 101, treated with V (160 mg.) combined with HCT (12,5 mg.) only.After 24 months there was a significantly reduction of the C-IMT ( from 1,174 to 1,053 P
