Genealogy of the Pagan Gods (review)

A French translation of Books I-XIII appeared as early as 1498, and an Italian translation by 1547. Because it is a titanic task, fifteen books long. "Because of both their great age and neglect of copyists the codices are so ruined that it prevents me from bring able to make a final decision about their accuracy: as a result there is more than ample room for someone who writes whatever he wants about the ancients to wander from the truth" (671).
