This chapter explains how self-awareness is important to team success. It includes practices for developing and enhancing self-awareness such as reflecting, taking personality tests, asking others for feedback, and engaging in social comparisons. The chapter also explains the importance of asking specific questions of one's self during reflection. These questions concern typical behaviors and frustrations and evaluating the group's performance. An easy way to think about self-awareness is to use the Johari Window model. The Johari Window model is a method used to understand and enhance communication between group members. Self-awareness can be extended to group awareness. Just as it is important for the readers to understand themselves, their motivations, strengths, frustrators, and opportunities for improvement, it is important to have an understanding of their group. Self-reflections, whether structured (through an inventory) or unstructured, are a good way to begin developing self-awareness. |
