A series of events rooted in Muscle Shoals’ musical past took place between 2009 and 2015. Some seemingly appeared out of nowhere, while others had deep-seated causes. In 2009, President Obama signed the Omnibus Public Land Management Act, which created the Muscle Shoals National Heritage Area (MSNHA). In January 2010, the Alabama legislature officially designated the Singing River Bridge in Muscle Shoals. In February 2012, Rolling Stone proclaimed a “Muscle Shoals revival” with the release of Alabama Shakes’ debut EP.¹ In September 2012, the magazine Relix ran a feature article titled “The New Sound of the Shoals.”² The following month,
