A brewery was built in New Amsterdam (New York) in 1633. Legislation in 1657 encouraged hop growing. The history of hops and hop drying followed the movement of settlers across the country from east to west. Settlers started new hop yards and built new hop houses which eclipsed the hopping counties they had left behind. These hop regions were all in the northern latitudes of the USA
