Farnham and Hampshire

The hop kilns of Farnham and Hampshire have featured in earlier chapters, notably Chapter 7 on inset kilns. This chapter brings Ttogether an account of the region and its hop kilns over a longer time span. The title may seem misleading: Farnham is a town in Surrey and Hampshire a county. There was an intense area of hopping in and around Farnham which is close to the county boundary. The surrounding Surrey land to the east, mainly sandy heath, is not suitable for hops. On the west side Farnham was the gateway to the extensive rolling chalk countryside of Hampshire
