Zusammenfassung: | By 1803, the thirteen original states (the former colonies of Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina and Virginia), had been joined by Vermont (1791), Kentucky (1792), Tennessee (1796) and Ohio (1803). President Thomas Jefferson knew that no European power or Native American tribe would be able to stem further American expansion into the vast and almost empty territories of the West, and in 1803 he sent US Army Captain Meriwether Lewis to explore them.
