Societal Security

The inclusion of Societal Security in a curriculum is justified by the fact that cyberspace is an impossibly diverse place where acceptable behavior is pretty much in the eyes of the beholder. Consequently, knowledge of what constitutes correct legal and ethical behavior is a prerequisite in the development of a proper understanding of cyberdefense strategy; since those issues are almost always ill defined and highly relative. Thus, cybersecurity students and practitioners must be able to both characterize, as well as evaluate the common conventions, concepts, and concerns of human interactions in a virtual society. That requirement is particularly relevant in guiding our understanding of how virtual rules apply to the assurance of proper personal and professional conduct in people's day-to-day lives. The presence of a statement of formal principles allows individuals and corporations to formulate an ethical approach to virtual space, as well as better control their subsequent behavior and interactions. In any conversation about something as abstract as ethics and law, it is important to have mutually agreed-on and well-defined principles at your disposal. These constitute a formal point of reference for judging correct behavior. Therefore, in this chapter, the reader will understand the relevance of Societal Security in the digital milieu as well as the behavioral challenges that worldwide interconnectedness poses to our society. That includes such topics as cybercrime, cyber law and cyber sociology. It also connects the cyber policy knowledge area to ethical behavior, specifically in the viral realm of digital privacy.
