How sustainable is smart and how smart is sustainable?

In this chapter we explore connections between smart and sustainable urban performance for a global pool of cities assembled within the Environment EuropeTM Sustainable Cities Database. We consider smart sustainable city to be the main theoretical framework where smart and sustainable dimensions are intertwined and not separated. We use visualization tools to illustrate connections between individual indicators and employ an econometric model to assess the factors determining the urban CO2 emissions. We conclude that although there are significant connections between smart indicators and several indicators of sustainable urban performance, such evidence is limited when CO2 emissions are concerned. It remains to be seen how smart solutions help cities to be more sustainable.
