Interviewer Laura Lee made her first visit to Susie Morgan’s Clarks Court Alley home on May 5, 1938. She spoke with Susie’s father, Oscar Morgan, a short, thin man in “worn overalls” who worked seventy-two hours a week as a dishwasher.³ Lee told Mr. Morgan she had come to meet Susie’s parents so that she could “understand [her] better,” which was protocol for Frazier’s study: to interview parents, grandparents, and siblings of the selected adolescent subjects.
