It provides an analysis of how countries have successfully handled the challenges encountered in adopting open access policies. It examines the adoption of open access by different stakeholders, including international and national governments, funding agencies, libraries and universities. It particularly explores the ways Nigeria is beginning to embrace open access. This chapter explores the national adoption of open access policies. It also explores the ways Nigeria is beginning to embrace open access. Universities play a major role in the open access movement as they serve as the nerve point that generates and ensures the integrity and quality of published materials. This is achieved through active participation in the peer-review process of journal articles. The chapter provides an analysis of how countries have successfully handled the challenges encountered in adopting open access policies. It examines the adoption of open access by different stakeholders, including international and national governments, funding agencies, libraries and universities. The chapter looks at open access in Nigeria and at the entrance of open access to the Nigerian system. The number of open access repositories, open access journals and open access mandates/policies has increased greatly. The United States was one of the adopters of open access. The United Kingdom has been very strategic in the development of open access.
