My career has been that of a teacher. Like all such, I owe a great debt to those who taught me. I went to three different institutions, Aberdovey (so-named then) Council School, University College School in Hampstead, and Oxford University. All left their mark upon me, intellectually and psychologically. It was also a very instructive range of experiences since the extraordinary differences between them, in terms of geographical location obviously but even more as indicators of the huge variations of class and culture in mid-twentieth century Britain, illustrate a great deal about the contrasts and divisions within British society, then
