Semantic Web Technologies

The semantic web creates an environment where content can be precisely specified so that it is more accessible to software agents. This capability can be utilized in e-learning systems for the development of learning ontologies, semantic annotations of learning materials, and parameter-driven content customization. By merging existing adaptive technologies with the concepts of the semantic web for content representation, web semantic technologies can facilitate system interoperability and content reuse. This study summarizes the current level of knowledge in the research field of semantic web technologies and their incorporation into e-learning systems. It also shows how common problems, implementation techniques, and the use of semantics in some of the most popular learning management systems in use today can be used to improve e-learning systems.
