Zusammenfassung: | This chapter explores the skills and competence required for the maritime industry, specifically in the context of autonomous shipping. Based on a forecasting workshop with 16 maritime education and training experts, the findings highlight the continued importance of human involvement in the shipping industry despite increasing automation and autonomy. The discussions focus on upscaling and modifying human competence, rather than replacing it with technology. The study emphasises that the demand for skills will increase and require an expansion in both the width and depth of competence profiles. The participants identified several key areas of competence, including maritime knowledge, technical expertise, IT competence, legal and ethical awareness, collaboration with people and technology, adaptability, and specific psychological characteristics. These findings suggest that the discussion about the human role in autonomous shipping can be an opportunity to remodel maritime education and training. Overall, the study highlights the importance of investing in human capital as a prerequisite for the successful application of Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships. |
