Turtle Bay

In the run-up to leaving Colombo, I had contacted people about a follow-up job. It was soon clear I would not be offered a chief-of-mission position, but two interesting possibilities surfaced. One was an office directorship in the Bureau of Intelligence Research, and the other was as head of the Social and Economic Section of the U.S. Mission to the United Nations in New York, both interesting and tempting for various reasons. In the end I took the guarded advice of an old friend, in fact the person who offered me the inr job. He was a classic New Yorker
