As referenced in Chapter 1, the breadth and depth of the knowledge and skill associated with the job of "principal" can appear overwhelming. The management responsibilities that traditionally defined the principal's job are now the baseline level of expectation. That the school will run in an orderly and efficient manner is a given and the expectation is that the real job of the principal is to move instruction forward (Murphy, 1998).
