Zusammenfassung:	Lineage choice, or the way progeny of the same pluripotent precursor adopt diverse fates, depends on the regulation of the key transcription factor genes themselves. Rothenberg comments on a new study in which the gene encoding an essential hematopoietic transcription factor, SCL, is used to illustrate a strategy that may provide a shortcut to mapping the regulatory regions for such genes.
