Zusammenfassung:  Numerous smaller studies had also demonstrated the importance of cryptosporidiosis in young children and its association with malnutrition (reviewed in [5]) [5-19], but Cryptosporidium had not previously garnered significant attention from the pharmaceutical industry or major funding organizations such as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. In immunocompetent adults and less severely ill children, clinical response rates to nitazoxanide as high as 96% have been reported [37], and newer studies have suggested that it is safe in children less than 1 year of age [38]. [...]although clearly inadequate for severely malnourished children and immunocompromised individuals [20], nitazoxanide can serve as a standard of care against which potential new treatments must be measured.
