Since gliotoxin is immunosuppressive and cytocidal [17], it can be speculated that the fungus benefits from nutrients released by the gliotoxin-destroyed host cells. Concluding Remarks Among the over 200 species of Aspergillus, A. fumigatus is the best at meeting the four features discussed in this review. Since innate immunity protects against Aspergillus, the reason for the wide spread of IA caused by A. fumigatus is due to the global distribution of both the fungus and an increase in susceptible hosts. |
