Zusammenfassung:Various levels through which water quality management/monitoring programmes could evolve are examined. Factors to be considered in categorizing management strategies and information needs are discussed. These included planning, financial incentives, research and narrative, numerical and graphical information. The information needs and monitoring systems for crisis management strategies, criteria/standard only strategies, controlling strategies and compliance-assisted strategies are examined. Application of these strategies within Egypt and the U.S.A. is described.
