Nonlinear Rossby Wave Dynamics in the Solar Photosphere

A nonlinear theory of vortical Rossby wave motion is applied to explain the detection of solitary structures in the solar photosphere. It is shown that the shallow-water approximation of the Rossby theory is perfectly consistent with the experimental data from the photosphere.
