Zusammenfassung: | This essay begins with a narrative reading of John 5:1-18 that also takes into account various socio-historical and religious aspects of the construction of disability in the Jewish world and the role of the pool of Bethesda in the healing options available to those with disabilities. Next I reflect on the lives of people with disabilities in the Judeo-Christian world and suggest that the dominant depiction in the NT texts of people with disabilities as those in need of healing is an oversimplification of their lives. The essay concludes that it is necessary to locate the presence of people with disabilities in the biblical narratives in positive and empowering ways. |
