Zusammenfassung: | Thermodynamics is a very general theory, based on fundamental symmetries. It generalizes classical mechanics and incorporates theoretical concepts such as field and field equations. Although all these ingredients are of the highest importance for a scientist, they are not given the attention they perhaps deserve in most undergraduate courses. Nowadays, powerful computers in conjunction with equally powerful software can ease the exploration of the crucial ideas of thermodynamics. The purpose of the present work is to show how the utilization of symbolic computation software can lead to a complementary understanding of thermodynamics. The method was applied to first and second year physics students in the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Greece) during the 2002-2003 academic year. The results indicate that symbolic computation software is appropriate not only for enhancing the teaching of the fundamental principles in thermodynamics and their applications, but also for increasing students' motivation for learning. |
