The Principles of Escalation and Escalation Management

This chapter discusses the historical and theoretical antecedents to modern escalation management theory. The author argues that escalation can only be managed, not controlled, by understanding its nature, understanding actions that might trigger opponent escalations, and avoiding taking those actions, even though one's own risk and escalation calculi might not see them as important or compelling.
