Explores the role of African Americans and expelled white southerners in constructing and maintaining Underground Railroad escape corridors in the Kentucky "borderlands," which created national and international Underground Railroad escape corridors. This chapter also examines the impact of the Second Great Awakening on residents of Appalachia, which led to fervent antislavery opposition which resisted the nation's move toward proslavery religious messaging.
